Though Admiral Tutoring has been successfully preparing students for the SAT in small, directed classes in independent schools in the Los Angeles area, what we offer our private students is one-on-one tutoring in their own homes.

Why one-on-one? Simply because this is what works best. Why should your student waste his or her valuable time [and your valuable money!] in a classroom, reviewing vocabulary, when what he or she needs help in is math? Admiral instructors zero in on each student's specific strengths and weaknesses, and work precisely in the areas where the students need it most.

Why at home? Because in our hectic world, this is the most effective way to save our students time, to say nothing of driving

How many sessions? Our standard SAT course is 15 hours of instruction.

How much does it cost? The cost is $100/hour. Occasionally two students will work together, and the fee for that is $80/hour each; or three, for $60/hour each.

Why Admiral? The high level of our instructors, first and foremost, all of whom are college graduates, many of whom hold advanced degrees, and all of whom are carefully selected to serve as role models for the students as well as academic coaches.

We have been preparing students for the SAT for years, and we are extremely proud of our track record. "You raised my daughter's score by 300 points!" one mother of an independent-school student called us last week. But the truth is that she raised her own score—we only showed her how to do it.

Admiral's SAT Curriculum:

Admiral has designed its own SAT curriculum, based on a careful analysis of the new SAT, together with what we know works best. This curriculum is written and updated by Admiral's instructors, and derives from decades of cumulative experience in test-prep instruction.

Curriculum materials include the following:

  • NAVIGATIONS, Admiral's Guide to the SAT . Our own 40-page booklet, this is the core of the Admiral curriculum, and it is what the student will follow along in, filling in the blanks, as he or she accompanies the instructor's presentation. The Navigationsbegins with a discussion of the basic facts of the test-- its structure, timing, instructions, and scoring-- and the various strategies required to optimize performance. It then moves on to examine separately the Math and Verbal sections, and how the strategies apply to each. It wraps up with review sheets for both sections.
  • Continuing Your Studies . Several pages of helpful hints and study materials for those wishing to continue preparing on their own.
  • Two Practice Tests . Two actual SAT's that were administered in the past. They are given to our students under simulated test circumstances, after which they are graded and used for diagnostic purposes as well as discussion and study.
  • Frequently Asked Questions . A simple guide, in question-and-answer form, to the logistical information needed by the test-taker and his or her family for the SAT, PSAT, ACT, and AP tests: what to bring to the test, where to take it, how to register, when the scores are sent out, which colleges to send them to, etc.
  • Fingertip Facts for Parents . A reference card with all relevant test information, such as dates and times, reduced to one easy-to-read page of instructions.

Admiral SAT Preparation includes:

  • Critical Reading
    • Vocabulary building (Latin roots)
    • Intensive writing skills
    • Quantitative comparisons
    • Sentence completion
    • Critical reading
    • Speed reading
    • Anagrams, other vocab-building games
    • Literature review
  • Writing
  • Math
    • Algebra basics, including
    • Single/multiple variables
    • Single/multiple equations
    • Geometry formulae
    • Averages, ratios, percentages
    • Simple permutations
    • Student-produced responses
    • Symbol-applied logic

Important test-taking strategies, including timing, test layout, and guessing/estimating basics.

Materials: Our smaller Introductory, Brush-up, and Advanced Workshop courses provide take-home review sheets, and our guide to the tests. Our more lengthy courses, the Intensive and the Comprehensive, provide the same take-home materials plus ourNavigations booklet. They delve more deeply into strategies, allocate more time for practice and discussion, and conduct simulated tests.

Homework: Practice tests, both math and verbal, as well as writing practice and vocab study. Admiral's specially designed take-home materials (vocab cards, test books ) make homework as painless for the students-- and as interesting-- as possible.

Parent involvement: Admiral knows the value of parental support. To this end, we hold a preliminary meeting for the parents, to explain--and demystify--the tests, answer their questions, win their support, and generally talk about the college application process. Many of these parents are new to this process; Admiral is sensitive to this, and we go out of our way to make them feel at home and empowered. Our Fingertip Facts for parents orient them on procedures for test-taking, college selection, admissions, and application deadlines.

All courses includes practice tests and evaluations.

Materials included: Admiral's Navigations interactive class notes, our Continuing Studies Guide, our Facts on the Tests, binders, snacks, and vocab rings .
